Though grapes have been planted in South Africa since the 1800s, it is only in the past two decades, post-Apartheid that South Africa has stormed into the international arena of excellence in wine along side other New World Wine producers New Zealand and Australia. South African wines are simple and unpretenious. They share characteristics from their Old World ancestors and their New World cousins all the while being distinctly South African.
